The League of Women Voters Beloit would like to comment on several decisions of the School District of Beloit Board:
- Transparency is very important for good government. We noticed that this week’s agenda changed a couple of times this last week before being finalized. This practice makes board transparency and adherence to open meeting laws more difficult to maintain.
- The School District of Beloit Board needs to be transparent on all potential agenda items that may change the outcome of the budget when budgets are currently being scrutinized (i.e. hiring of an expulsion officer vs. board reviewing expulsion cases). Before rushing to change any practice, the board should fully examine the pros and cons – including the financial cost and social effects for each practice. For example, with this decision, how will the expulsion rate change? What are the reasons for the change? What do teachers and administrators say about the two systems?
- We see that there will be an ad hoc committee to assist in giving budgetary recommendations to the Finance Committee. This sounds like a good idea, but before knowing whether appointees can be effective committee members, are there guidelines on how often they will meet and when?
Thank you for your attention.
