Upcoming Annual Meeting, April 24th
"Citizenship and Voting Rights: Perspectives from the
Rock County Jail Ministry"
The League of Women Voters of Beloit Board has been busy preparing a virtual Annual Meeting. We were hoping that we would be able to meet in person this year, but the time has not yet come. The board has many exciting proposals for our league members to review and vote on and we hope that you all will take the time to review the ballot and return it by April 19th, either by email, U.S. mail, or online. We will have our business meeting first with the results of the ballots, followed by a presentation by member Carol Wickersham: "Citizenship and Voting Rights: Perspectives from the Rock County Jail Ministry."

Proposal to the LWV of Beloit Membership for Study
Local Environmental Sustainability Study
The LWV Sustainability committee (Susan Adams, Deb Fallon, Brenda Plakans, Dorothy Scavera, and Betsy Brewer) would like to propose a two-year study focused on environmental sustainability in Beloit. The study will take as its foundation the National LWV’s position on the environment and natural resources, and will draw on the LWV of Wisconsin’s positions on natural resources.
The timing is propitious.
- Nationally, on his first day in office, President Biden signed an executive order to promote and protect public health and the environment, and to advance environmental justice.
- In Wisconsin, Governor Evers has established a Task Force on Climate Change, chaired by Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes.
- The City Council of Beloit has issued a proclamation in support of achieving carbon neutrality in the city by 2040.
- The positive response to the Sustainability Committee’s three-part series of talks by climate change experts on February 25, March 11, and March 18, 2021 signals the importance of this topic to LWV members and other area residents. Already, several people have stepped forward to ask to partner with us.
To conduct the study, we will partner with stakeholders within and beyond the LWV in order to understand environmental sustainability opportunities and challenges in the Beloit area, as well as existing assets and initiatives. We also hope to continue to hold public events from time to time to educate and inform the LWV membership and the general public about environmental sustainability and climate change. Such engagement will be critical if carbon neutrality is to be achieved in the Beloit area.
