Honoring Bette Carr

On November 5, League members gathered at Mechanics Green in Beloit to thank Bette Carr for her many years of service and leadership.  A spruce tree has been planted in her honor.

The photos show Bette with her tree and the plaque placed at the foot of the tree.

Thank you for everything you have done for the League and for Beloit, Bette!

Data Center Gold Rush: Diving Into Water Demands

Tues., Dec. 9, 6 pm, Zoom from LWV Upper Mississippi River Region

As a leader on the rapidly emerging issues around data center development in the upper Midwest and nationally, CURE will share lessons learned about how a lack of transparency harms communities across the country. Currently there are more proposed hyperscale data centers than our infrastructure and resources can support. These proposed projects don’t fit into our permitting and regulatory systems. We will look at why this matters for our communities, with a focus specifically on water.

Beloit School District Asthma Inhaler Funds

LWV of Beloit is a member of the Stateline Clean Air Coalition.  Currently, the Coalition is supporting the School District of Beloit with fundraising to fully stock their Stock Albuterol Program.  A full stock in all schools will cost $7,000.

The Stock Asthma Medication Program aims to make sure emergency inhalers are available to any student who experiences respiratory distress.

Those who want to donate to the cause can do so HERE.  Please indicate the donation is for the "Stock Albuterol Program"

ACTION: The Beloit League Board approved a letter writing campaign to Governor Evers regarding opening voting to those in jail/prison who have been convicted of felony offenses. There are currently two states (Vermont and Maine) that allow all citizens to vote, no matter what their judicial status may be. In Wisconsin, felons may not vote until they are “off paper”, meaning they have completed all time and all fees/fines that have been ordered by the court and/or probation. This may not be consistent for each person convicted. We are encouraging all our league members, as well as friends and family members, to write to Governor Evers and/or your state representative or senator. See the templates HERE

Land Acknowledgement and Commitment for LWV Beloit

The members of League of Women Voters of Beloit gratefully acknowledge the Ho-Chunk Nation, the People of the Big Voice, and the Potawatomi Nation, the Keeper of the Fire, on whose ancestral homelands we gather, as well as the diverse Native peoples who make their home here today. We are thankful and appreciative of the traditional stewardship of the land and waters and commit to continue to educate our members and our communities in caring for our environment. In a shared collaborative future, we will continue our mission to educate and empower voters, defend democracy and advocate in other cultural and shared visions.
