Comments to City Council January 2 2024

Steve Howland’s emailed comments to the Beloit City Council on January 2, 2024

“Concerning the proposed housing project on Sixth Street I have spoken to the City Council numerous times. I again stress the need for attainable housing in Beloit for working families who are currently unable to find or afford the limited options available in Beloit. This site is one of the few in Beloit where the overlap of open land and financial incentives make this type of housing possible.

I recognize the concerns and desires of current residents of the area, but I would ask them to at least review the assumptions of their fears. Why assume the worst? Are the assumptions that there will be too much traffic, too much noise, glaring outsiders, increased crime, and falling property values justified? A well-planned and well-managed mixed-income project can allay negative impacts and help us imagine the possibility that new neighbors might become wonderful friends.

I urge the City Council to support this project.”
